Graphic score for Step One: Photocopy This Score

Program Notes

Step One: Photocopy This Score (2023) is an exploration of the different modes of sounding and modes of listening which arise in improvised performance. The piece is variable with respect to ensemble configuration and duration, providing general prompts that can be interpreted on conventional instruments, with found objects, or with other instrumentation entirely. The performance begins with improvisers taking turns to photocopy their copy of the score, after which each performer begins choosing their own path through the labyrinth of prompts, resulting in dynamic, non-linear performances which encourage a combination of solo creativity and engaged, multi-player improvisation. Over the course of the performance, each copy of the score is gradually destroyed. The performance concludes when all performers have completely destroyed their own copy of the score.
